Currently the research focuses on the evolution/evolvability
of the genotype-phenotype relationship. In digital evolution this means
the evolution of processor structure and the corresponding
instruction set: the definition of the processor is in the organism's
genome so it is subject to mutation enabling evolution. Thus the
replication of the digital organisms consists of two phases:
Other possible/planned directions of research:
- food chains
- informational-ecological niches
- competition for matter (now the matter, the building
blocks for organisms are freely available, that is not so biological)
- inhomgenous lifespaces
- multicellularity
- sexual reproduction (this should emerge if it's
needed ;)
- lamarckian evolution (it's quite possible for a
digital organism to rewrite itself and immediately transfer its modified
genome to its spawn)
