Now the development has two main ways:
  1. Using processors with fixed architecture for the traditional experiments and code optimization.
  2. Developing an evolvable processor: the description of the virtual machine is in the organism's genome. The underlying structure is a Universal Turing Machine-like universal processor called ARCHE. (You can find a paper describing the UP idea here.)
The two different approaches will be integrated into the same source tree, although ARCHE requires some fundamental changes in the core system.
